There Will Be No Second EU Reform Treaty Referendum

EU Affairs Minister Dick Roche TD today said that there will only be one referendum held in Ireland on the provisions of the EU Reform Treaty.
The fact of the matter is that for this treaty to have legal effect, it must be ratified by all 27 EU member states by the end of this year.
There is no plan B and there is absolutely no possibility of this Treaty being subject to a further renegotiation.
The idea that we can reject this Treaty and have another Referendum as happened with the Nice Treaty is a dilusion. That cannot and will not happen.
This treaty is the result of years of painstaking work by all the EU Member States, by the Convention on the Future of Europe, by two Inter-Governmental Conferences and by the European Council.
There is neither the possibility nor the prospect of another renegotiation and those who are suggesting this are very seriously misleading the Irish People.
Without Irish ratification, this Treaty 'is dead' and that will have the most serious ramification for the whole of Europe. It will also mean the Ireland will be throwing away all the goodwill that we have amassed in the EU over the years for no benefit.
